The falling off a log theory and other observations on the software industry

Speaker: Allan Kelly

Synopsis

Allan Kelly believes that starting your own software company is as easy as falling off a log. That doesn't mean you will last very long, most will fail within the first year. A handful of these companies will be very luck and become very successful, and the rest will be cursed by doing something right, but not a lot else.

In this sometimes humorous talk Allan will take a look at some software business models, why software businesses fail, why some succeed; the chaos that is software development, the search for mediocrity and try to pin down what this Agile thing actually is. As if that weren't enough he promises to reveal his biggest ever mistake - in the software world that is.

Software East: Cambridge, UK. February 18th, 2010.

Software East's February event focusses on user-centred design.

Rachel Jones, Instrata - User-Centred Innovation & Design

User-centred designers have a skill set to carry out activities as varied as user interface design, user testing, user requirements specification, user research, concept creation, and user-centred innovation. On existing projects, a software engineer or business analyst is often asked to do some of these activities and muddle along as best they can.

In this talk, Rachel will discuss the type of development projects where user-centred design skills add value (and the type of projects where muddling along is fine) and indicate where and when user-centred skills are best engaged.

Visit the Software East Social Network for more information.

Software East's January event focusses on Agile Adoption Anti-Patterns. This is a free event but you must pre-register before 18th January.

James Lewis, Thoughtworks - Agile Adoption Anti-Patterns

This session focuses on the things that you shouldn't do when trying to introduce Agile practices to an organisation.

Maybe you drank the Agile cool-aid and are struggling to introduce agile on your own or you are an Agile Coach trying to make some sense of the madness that is your current client. There are many more ways for agile adoption to fail than for it to succeed. Drawing on his experience introducing Agile principles and practices in large blue-chip organisations, the speaker will showcase a number of anti-patterns, technological to methodological that could put your agile rollout at risk.

Visit the Software East Social Network to register and for more information.

Software East: Cambridge, UK. November 19th, 2009.

Software East's November event focusses on using Kanban for agile development.

Karl Scotland (Conchango) - Five Steps to Kanban - A Kanban System for Software Development provides an alternative means of creating an Agile Development process using Lean Thinking. Creating a Kanban System is not as simple as adopting a previously defined process as a starting point. Instead, a team needs to come up a model of its own process which will form the basis for further continuous improvement. This talk will introduce 5 steps that a team can use to create their own Agile process using a Kanban System for Software Development.

When Good Architecture Goes Bad: 4th March, 2009. London, UK

Mark Dalgarno will lead a workshop session on the topic of Software Erosion at the London meeting of the British Computer Society's Software Practice Advancement group.

As software evolves, its architecture ‘as-is’ gradually deviates from its architecture ‘as-hoped-for’ – the software is said to erode or decay.

Software Erosion can be a problem because:

  • the time, effort and risk in implementing further changes increases
  • the effect of further changes becomes harder to predict
  • further changes typically cause the ‘as-is’ architecture to deviate further from the ‘as-hoped-for’ architecture – the situation becomes worse.

This session looks at examples of software erosion and explores practices to prevent or slow such decay. Participants should come prepared with architectural 'war stories'. There will be a couple of group exercises but no test at the end.

Preregister for this event here.

Cambridge Wireless Software SIG

Cambridge Wireless Software SIG - Tackling Diversity: November 20th, 2009. Cambridge, UK.

With hundreds of handsets on the market developers must dig deep and provide several different product variants to compete. But how do you tackle the diversity issue?

Cambridge Wireless is delighted to offer this half-day Software SIG event championed by Mark Dalgarno of Software Acumen and Peter Hazlett from Symbian.

Current opinion says that the ‘one-size-fits-all’ model just isn’t attainable at present, leaving mobile developers with the issue of producing several diverse product variants to meet this challenge.

This diversity arises from several sources:

  • Differences between handsets.
  • Operator-specific requirements.
  • Market differentiation e.g high-end vs low-end products.
  • Legal differences (e.g different laws on gambling).

This event will outline the scale of the problem, look at ways of addressing it and consider whether the future holds more of the same.

Speakers will be John Scott (Qualcomm), Danilo Beuche (pure-systems) and Steven Kelly (MetaCase).

Events are FREE to Cambridge Wireless Members. Tickets for non-members are £150.00 plus VAT.  To join Cambridge Wireless, and attend all future events for free please visit: www.cambridgewireless.co.uk/sign-up
